Following an introduction to The Shadow and a Blue Coal commercial, Captain Joe's crew uses fire to lure a ship into a trap. After the pirate captain murders Sir John and Captain Nielsen, Lamont Cranston and Margot Lane are taken to a mysterious, luxurious island where Lamont suspects a larger conspiracy is at play. In a dramatic conclusion, The Shadow uses hypnosis to manipulate a pirate captain into releasing Margot Lane and escaping an island depot filled with explosives. After the island is destroyed by a bomb detonated by Mr. Cranston, Lamont reflects on the justice of the event.
